The exam at a glance
- 125multiple-choice questions
- 70%pass mark (88 of 125 correct)
- 4 hourswriting time
- ~1.9 minper question on average
Every question has four options and one correct answer. There are no trick questions, and every question is worth one mark. The exam is the same interprovincial Red Seal exam everywhere in Canada.
Question types: knowledge and recall 25–30%, procedural and application 40–45%, critical thinking 25–30%.
What's on the exam
The questions follow the Instrumentation and Control Technician Red Seal Occupational Standard, grouped into major work activities. The biggest blocks are Installs and services process measuring and indicating devices (30), Installs, configures and services final control elements (25), Installs and services control systems and process control (21).
| Block | Major work activity | Questions | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Performs common occupational skills | 12 | 10% |
| B | Installs and services process measuring and indicating devices | 30 | 24% |
| C | Installs and services safety and security systems and devices | 11 | 9% |
| D | Installs and services hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems | 14 | 11% |
| E | Installs, configures and services final control elements | 25 | 20% |
| F | Installs and services communication systems and devices | 12 | 10% |
| G | Installs and services control systems and process control | 21 | 17% |
| Total | 125 | 100% |
How to study
- Measuring devices (B, 30) is the biggest block. Know DP flow (flow ∝ √DP), DP level with wet and dry legs, RTDs and thermocouples, mag, Coriolis and vortex meters, and 3-valve manifold order.
- Final control elements (E, 25): valve characteristics, cavitation and flashing, actuator fail action, positioner setup, stiction and VSD basics (speed = 120 × f ÷ poles).
- Control systems (G, 21): P, I and D action, PB versus gain (gain = 100 ÷ PB), cascade, ratio, feedforward and split range, plus PLC, DCS, HMI and SCADA basics.
- Signal math shows up everywhere: 4-20 mA and 3-15 psi scaling, percent of span, 250 Ω input voltage and loop voltage budgets. Practise until it is quick.
- Do the free self-assessment on the official exam page and spend your time on the tasks you rated lowest, weighted by how many questions they carry.
- Practise every day in short sets. When you get one wrong, work out why each wrong option is wrong, not just which one is right.
Working as an Instrumentation and Control Technician in Alberta and BC
Instrumentation and control technicians in Alberta and BC keep process plants measuring, controlling and shutting down safely.
- Alberta. Oil sands mining and in-situ operations around Fort McMurray, upgraders, refineries and petrochemical plants in the Industrial Heartland near Edmonton, petrochemical and gas processing around Red Deer, and Calgary-based controls, automation and pipeline SCADA work.
- British Columbia. The LNG export terminal and gas supply system on the Kitimat corridor, pulp mills and sawmills around Prince George, hydroelectric generation, and water treatment, food processing and manufacturing in Metro Vancouver and the Okanagan around Kelowna.
- Who hires. Plant owners and operators, maintenance and turnaround contractors, controls and automation integrators, pipeline operators, utilities and municipalities.
- The work pattern. Expect shift work at large plants, spring and fall turnarounds, and rotation or camp work at remote sites.
In Alberta the trade is a four-period apprenticeship, with classroom training at NAIT, Northwestern Polytechnic, Red Deer Polytechnic and SAIT (tradesecrets.alberta.ca). In BC it is run by SkilledTradesBC.
The Red Seal exam is the same everywhere: a Red Seal endorsement is recognized in every province and territory that takes part in the Red Seal Program, so this practice works wherever you write. Exam study guide
Try 3 sample questions
These are original practice questions from our Instrumentation and Control Technician question bank, not real exam questions.
Question 1 · Pressure, temperature, level & flow
What is the purpose of a 3-valve manifold on a DP transmitter?
- A. Mix the process fluids from both sides into one sample line
- B. Isolate the cell and equalize both sides
- C. Increase the DP
- D. Drain the tank
Show the answer
B. Isolate the cell and equalize both sides
Open the equalizer before isolating to avoid overpressuring one side.
Question 2 · Positioners
What is "split range" control?
- A. Two controllers drive one valve at the same time
- B. One controller output drives two valves over different signal ranges
- C. A valve with two seats
- D. Two positioners on one valve
Show the answer
B. One controller output drives two valves over different signal ranges
For example 4-12 mA to valve A and 12-20 mA to valve B.
Question 3 · Signal transducers
A 0-250 kPa transmitter reads 12 mA. What pressure is that?
- A. 150 kPa
- B. 100 kPa
- C. 125 kPa
- D. 130 kPa
Show the answer
C. 125 kPa
EU = LRV + (mA - 4)/16 × span = 0 + (12 - 4)/16 × 250 = 125 kPa.
