Red Seal exam pass mark, time limit and format

The pass mark is 70%, you get four hours, and every question is multiple choice with four options.

The facts

These come from the official Red Seal Exam Preparation Guide.

What 70% means for your trade

Because each question is worth one mark, 70% is simply 70% of your trade's question count. On a 100-question exam that's 70 correct answers. On a 125-question exam it's 88 (87.5 rounded up). Find your trade's count in our questions-by-trade table.

To pace yourself, the guide suggests dividing 240 minutes by your number of questions. That's 2.4 minutes per question on a 100-question exam, or about 1.9 minutes on 125.

What's tested

Questions are based on the sub-tasks in your trade's Red Seal Occupational Standard (or National Occupational Analysis). Only Common Core sub-tasks, the ones performed in at least 70% of provinces and territories, can be tested. The guide groups questions into three kinds: knowledge and recall, procedural and application, and critical thinking.

How to use this

  1. Check your trade's breakdown and spend the most time on the biggest blocks.
  2. Practise in timed sets so 2 minutes a question feels normal.
  3. Review why each wrong option is wrong, not just which one is right.
  4. Use the free practice quizzes, then try a mock exam.
