What "challenging" means
Challenging means writing the certification exam on the strength of your work experience instead of completing an apprenticeship. The Red Seal Exam Preparation Guide says the apprenticeship and certification authority in each province and territory decides who can write, and the rules differ by trade and by type of tradesperson, such as an apprentice or a trade qualifier.
The usual steps
- Find your trade's experience requirement with your provincial authority.
- Apply and have your work experience verified by your employers or references.
- Complete any practical or competency assessment your trade requires.
- Book and pass the exam. The pass mark is 70% (details).
By province
- Alberta: Trades Qualifier, Work Experience program
- British Columbia: Trade Qualifier through SkilledTradesBC
- Ontario: Trade Equivalency Assessment
In another province or territory? Contact your apprenticeship authority.
