Powerline Technician

Working as a Powerline Technician in Alberta and BC

Line crews in Alberta and BC build, maintain and repair distribution and transmission systems across cities, farmland, mountains and the northern resource regions.

• Alberta. Distribution and transmission work around Calgary, Edmonton and Red Deer, rural distribution across farm and ranch country, and high-voltage supply to oil sands operations near Fort McMurray and to gas plants across the province.
• British Columbia. Urban distribution in Metro Vancouver and the Okanagan around Kelowna, long transmission corridors through mountain terrain, and new lines and substations tied to industrial growth in the north, including the LNG corridor from Prince George to Kitimat.
• Who hires. Electric utilities, rural electrification associations (in Alberta), municipal utilities, transmission and distribution line contractors, and industrial sites that run their own high-voltage systems.
• The work pattern. Expect outdoor work in all weather, on-call storm and wildfire restoration, and travel or camp work on remote transmission projects.

In Alberta the apprenticeship is run through Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (tradesecrets.alberta.ca). In BC it is run by SkilledTradesBC.

The Red Seal exam is the same everywhere: a Red Seal endorsement is recognized in every province and territory that takes part in the Red Seal Program, so this practice works wherever you write. Exam study guide
