Why it matters
Offset math is in every pipefitter exam. You find travel, run or set from the fitting angle.
Key points
- For 45 degree fittings, travel = set x 1.414.
- For 22.5 degree fittings, travel = set x 2.613.
- For 60 degree fittings, travel = set x 1.155.
- Run for a 45 is equal to the set.
- Subtract fitting take-off from travel to get the cut length.
Study tip
Memorize the 45 degree constant first. It is the one used most.
Try these
A 45 degree offset with a 10 in set has travel of about:
- 10 in
- 12.5 in
- 14.1 in
- 20 in
Show answer
C. 14.1 in 10 x 1.414.
For a 45 degree offset the run equals:
- Twice the set
- The set
- Half the set
- The travel
Show answer
B. The set It is a 45-45-90 triangle.
The 60 degree travel constant is:
- 1.155
- 1.414
- 2.0
- 2.613
Show answer
A. 1.155 1 / sin 60.
