The exam at a glance
- 100multiple-choice questions
- 70%pass mark (70 of 100 correct)
- 4 hourswriting time
- ~2.4 minper question on average
Every question has four options and one correct answer. There are no trick questions, and every question is worth one mark. A formula sheet and an acronym list are provided at the sitting.
Question types: knowledge and recall 10–20%, procedural and application 35–45%, critical thinking 40–50%.
What's on the exam
The questions follow the Industrial Electrician Red Seal Occupational Standard, grouped into major work activities. The biggest blocks are Installs and maintains generating, distribution and service systems (23), Installs and maintains rotating and non-rotating equipment and control systems (21), Installs and maintains wiring systems (20).
| Block | Major work activity | Questions | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Performs common occupational skills | 9 | 9% |
| B | Installs and maintains generating, distribution and service systems | 23 | 23% |
| C | Installs and maintains wiring systems | 20 | 20% |
| D | Installs and maintains rotating and non-rotating equipment and control systems | 21 | 21% |
| E | Installs and maintains signalling and communication systems | 10 | 10% |
| F | Installs and maintains process control systems | 17 | 17% |
| Total | 100 | 100% |
How to study
- Almost half the exam (40–50%) is critical thinking. Expect calculations and fault-finding: three-phase power, transformer connections, open delta, motor speed and 4–20 mA scaling.
- Generating, distribution and service systems (B, 23) and rotating equipment and controls (D, 21) are the two biggest blocks. Know protection and coordination, grounding and bonding, starters, drives and motor faults.
- Process control (F, 17) carries more questions than most apprentices expect. Practise transmitter ranging, sensor types, PLC logic and pneumatic valve basics.
- Read ladder diagrams every day until seal-in circuits, interlocks and timer contacts are second nature.
- Do the free self-assessment on the official exam page and spend your time on the tasks you rated lowest, weighted by how many questions they carry.
- Practise every day in short sets. When you get one wrong, work out why each wrong option is wrong, not just which one is right.

These are original practice questions from our Industrial Electrician question bank, not real exam questions.
Question 1 · Protection devices
What does the interrupting rating of a breaker describe?
- A. The highest fault current it can safely clear at its rated voltage
- B. The time it takes to open on a short circuit at full voltage
- C. The voltage at which it trips when the supply rises too high
- D. The continuous current it carries without tripping on overload
Show the answer
A. The highest fault current it can safely clear at its rated voltage
The interrupting rating (kAIC) must equal or exceed the available fault current.
Question 2 · Motor control
On a ladder diagram, what does a seal-in (holding) contact do?
- A. Stops the motor when the overload relay senses too much current
- B. Delays the motor start until a set time has gone by
- C. Prevents two starters from energizing at the same time
- D. Keeps the starter coil energized after the start button is released
Show the answer
D. Keeps the starter coil energized after the start button is released
An auxiliary contact in parallel with the start button maintains the coil circuit.
Question 3 · Instrumentation I/O
What does an RTD measure?
- A. Level, by the change in capacitance of a probe
- B. Pressure, by the bending of a thin diaphragm
- C. Flow, by the time of flight of an ultrasonic pulse
- D. Temperature, by the change in a metal's resistance
Show the answer
D. Temperature, by the change in a metal's resistance
RTDs (often Pt100) rise in resistance as temperature rises.
