Construction Electrician Red Seal exam study guide

What's on the Construction Electrician Red Seal exam, how it's marked, and how to study for it. Free to read, no sign-up.

The exam at a glance

Every question has four options and one correct answer. There are no trick questions, and every question is worth one mark. A formula sheet and an acronym list are provided, plus code book information if required.

Question types: knowledge and recall 5–15%, procedural and application 60–70%, critical thinking 20–30%.

What's on the exam

The questions follow the Construction Electrician Red Seal Occupational Standard, grouped into major work activities. The biggest blocks are Installs, services and maintains wiring systems (30), Installs, services and maintains generating, distribution and service systems (28), Installs, services and maintains motors and control systems (21).

How to study

  1. Wiring systems (C, 30) and distribution and services (B, 28) are more than half the exam. Know conductor sizing, box and conduit fill, grounding and bonding, and transformer connections.
  2. The exam uses the Canadian Electrical Code without saying so. Practise finding rules and tables fast, because you won't be able to bring your own tabbed book.
  3. Motor controls (D, 21) reward drawing it out: sketch 2-wire and 3-wire control, overload placement and starter sequences until you can do them from memory.
  4. Work three-phase power, voltage drop and transformer ratio problems by hand. The formula sheet helps, but only if you know which formula to use.
  5. Do the free self-assessment on the official exam page and spend your time on the tasks you rated lowest, weighted by how many questions they carry.
  6. Practise every day in short sets. When you get one wrong, work out why each wrong option is wrong, not just which one is right.

Try 3 sample questions

These are original practice questions from our Construction Electrician question bank, not real exam questions.

Question 1 · Raceways, cables & boxes

You're pulling four conductors into a conduit. What's the maximum fill the CEC normally allows?

  1. A. 53% of the conduit's cross-section
  2. B. 31% of the conduit's total cross-section
  3. C. 60% of the conduit's cross-section
  4. D. 40% of the conduit's cross-section
Show the answer

D. 40% of the conduit's cross-section

The CEC conduit fill table allows 53% for one conductor, 31% for two, and 40% for three or more.

Question 2 · Starters & controls

A motor uses a 3-wire start/stop station with a holding contact. Power drops out and comes back. What happens?

  1. A. The motor stays off until someone presses start
  2. B. The motor restarts by itself as soon as power returns
  3. C. The motor starts up running in the reverse direction
  4. D. The overload trips and has to be reset by hand first
Show the answer

A. The motor stays off until someone presses start

When voltage drops, the coil drops out and opens the holding contact. The motor can't restart until start is pressed again. That's low-voltage protection.

Question 3 · Fire alarm & signalling

On a Class B fire alarm initiating circuit, what does the end-of-line resistor do?

  1. A. It lets the panel supervise the wiring for breaks
  2. B. It limits current so the detectors don't overheat
  3. C. It sets the sensitivity of the smoke detectors
  4. D. It tells the panel which zone has gone into alarm first
Show the answer

A. It lets the panel supervise the wiring for breaks

The panel watches a small current through the EOL device. If a wire breaks, the current stops and the panel signals a trouble.
